KAMAKANI (WINDS)
Aoa:
a very strong wind from Hanapepe, Kaua'i, well-liked by the people of
Ni'ihau. The wind affords good travel between the islands. Aoa-lae-nihi: a norheast wind that brings rain. It is also known as the ali'i wind, as it comes vey quietly on Ni'ihau. Lehua: a wind that somes to Ni'ihau from lehua. Like the naulu wind the Lehua is a northeastern trade, but it stirs up a bit more. Inuwai: a sea breeze, a water-absorbing wind. Unulau: a northeast trade wind that brings rain to Ni'ihau. Also associated with the appearance of the floating island Unulani. Wili-ahiu: a wild, untamed whirlwind at possible hurricane velocity. Papa'a-inu-wai:
a gentle wind that the people of Kaua;i sail to Ni'ihau. Sometimes it
is accompanied by a misty rain; other times it is with the sun. Also
called Pa'a-a-La. Pu-aia: a slight breeze off the ocean causing ripples in the water. Ae-loa: a strong trade wind from Kaua'i Lei-aloha: a caressing wind. La'a-a-ka'a: definition unknown. [Tava,Keale 1989:12] (NOT CONFIRMED ) |
