An archaeological inventory survey of the County of Kaua'i, Po'ipu Beach Park was recently undertaken. A major impetus of the survey was the identification of Kaneiolouma Heiau, generally located at the southeast corner of the park and the heiau's eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
A critical question to the survey is the dialectic between historic and archaeological documentation. The implication of this question to archaeological research is addressed.
