And Someone wanted to make more Fishponds

This documents a successful blocking of an attempt to create more aquaculture at Alekoko Pond.

"The Planning Commission is very much concerned about changes and/or improvements that might be made at the Menehune Fish Pond area...We notice that the area makai of the fishpond has been bulldozed and cleared of vegetation. We feel this is a historic and scenic site and would oppose any changes to this area... [letter written by Leonard H. Zalopany, Chairman, Kauai Planning Commission, May 7, 1971 to Sunao Kido State Board of Land and Natural Resources]. [Stauder, May 26 1971 pers comm]

Alekoko Pond lies within a Conservation District and is owned by the Kanoe estate, with Bishop Trust Co., Ltd. Agents.

The developers, N.S. W. Inc.. Walter S. Zane; Shiro Nishimura; Mitsuyuke Kido already cleared 2 acres near pond and had begun to dredge a second pond there for the purpose of aquaculture. This is opposed by the Kaua'i Historical Society which appealed to Gov. Burns. [Hnl Adv. June 17. 1971:A-6] .

Nishimura applied for permission: 1) to construct a 9,000 sq ft satellite pond, 200 ft makai of the ancient 'Alekoko Pond. 2) raise mullet fingerlings to be placed in large pond. 3) tilapia in large pond.

This is opposed by the Kaua'i Planning Commission; Kaua'i Historical Society, Hale-o-na-Ali'i-o-Hawai'i and Friends of the Earth. Hnl Adv. June 26, 1971:B-?]'Alekoko Pond

The State Board of Land and Natural Resources meeting in Wailuku, Maui denies Nishimura's petition to build pond. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to acquire pond area as wildlife refuge.

Board ordered Nishimura to bulldoze area into its original land form within 60 days.
