Kuhio Highway for a Proposed
Fiber Optics Trenching Project
Waipouli, Kaua'i

Three 10-meter long backhoe trenches were excavated along the mauka side of Kuhio Highway in Waipouli on the east shore of Kaua'i. This trenching took place between Fernandes Road and Waipouli Road in Coconut Grove.

The purpose was to assess impact of proposed fiber optics cable trenching on archaeological resources. The three trenches showed a modern fill layer overlying beach sand deposits generally less than one meter above the water table. No archaeological materials were encountered which is consistent with other testing projects in the immediate area.

No further archaeological work is recommended for this section of the cable trenching northwards to the Waipouli Canal. However, on-site archaeological monitoring is recommended for trenching from Waipouli Canal through Kapa'a Town.
