Archaeological Subsurface Testing
of a One-Acre Parcel
Waipouli, Kaua'i
TMK 4-3-06:01

Hallett H. Hammatt and William H. Folk
Cultural Surveys Hawai'i for Peter Ricciardi
May 1992

Archaeological subsurface testing was performed on the one-acre property (43,560 square feet) in TMK 4-3-06:01 along Kuhio Highway in Waipouli, Kawaihau District, Island of Kaua'i at the request of the owner, Mr. Peter Ricciardi to comply with requirements of the State Historic Preservation Division. Five backhoe trenches (comprising 60 linear meters) excavated to expose depositional layers on the property and determine their content. All the trenches showed similar stratigraphy with a modern A-horizon containing recent trash underlying a thick imported fill layer and white culturally sterile beach sand. The area was formerly a sandy marsh before it was filled to create residential land. Consequently, no further archaeological investigation is recommended.
