Archaeological subsurface testing was conducted on a 12-acre parcel (TMK 4-3-07:27) at Waipouli, Kaua'i. The parcel is located at Coconut Plantation on the north side of the Sheraton Hotel. A survey and backhoe testing project was performed here in 1988 in which 49 backhoe trenches were excavated. Five (5) human burials were located, and a cultural layer was identified along the shoreline and in the southeastern portion of the property.

The cultural layer was radiocarbon dated to after A.D.1430 (Rosendahl,1990). Seventeen one-meter square, hand dug trenches were excavated in the present project in which the inland portion of the cultural layer (Site 1801) was defined as an area of less than 3500 square feet. The two inland burials found by Rosendahl were relocated, and no other human remains were encountered.

It is proposed that all cultural material and human remains within the 100-foot shoreline zone be preserved in place with simple measures taken to prevent damage to the site. It is proposed that the inland portion of the cultural layer be subjected to data recovery and the 2 inland burials be disinterred and reinterred in the shoreline zone. Full archaeological monitoring is recommended.
